SABER  VS.  CONOCER

These are two verbs that are sometimes confused because the English translation of both is "to know".  However, in Spanish, SABER and CONOCER have very different uses.

Therefore, it is important to understand the different uses of SABER and CONOCER.

SABER = To know a fact.  To have information.  To know how do do something.

CONOCER = To know a person.  To be acquainted with.  To be familiar with.

Any time you are unsure of which verb to use, ask yourself, "Is it possible for me to know all of the information or all of the facts connected with this topic?"  If your answer is "No", then use CONOCER.  If your answer is "Yes", then use SABER.  Here are a couple of examples:

I read many Civil War novels.  I "know" that period of American history very well.                 (Since it is impossible to really "know" every detail about the Civil War, then use CONOCER)

I "know" what my grades are.  I received a higher grade in each of my five classes.                    (It is very likely that you "know" your marking period grades in each subject.  Use SABER.

Yo CONOZCO ese época de la historia de los Estados Unidos muy bien.                                   Yo SÉ las notas que recibo.  Son mejores en cada una de mis cinco clases.

Note that the forms of SABER and CONOCER are irregular in "YO" form.  However, all other forms of each verb are regular.  Practice using SABER and CONOCER by clicking the link below.
